blog catch-up
Just incorporating earlier responses into the actual blog.
What do you like least about your hometown?
I come from Milpitas, a smallish suburb of San Jose. This question was very, very hard; I've lived in 7 cities and it is by far my favorite. The diversity, both racial and political, religious, philosophical, edible, etc... it just amazes me. I think that what I like least about it is that there isn't enough cheap public transportation; if it were up to me, Bart (bay area rail transit) would pass through, connecting us to San Jose, San Francisco, and other cities.
How might Frankenstein relate to Rousseau's State of Nature/Hobbes' State of War?
I'm inclined to think that Frankenstain largely confirms Rosseau. The monster is independent, unconnected, and largely passionless; all he needs/wants is a female, food, and shelter. He is a more social animal than Rosseau gives him credit for, but I disagreed with Rosseau on that point anyway; I think that humans are, and have always been, social animals.
Hobbes, I would argue, is flat-out wrong if we look to the monster as our "savage". Hobbes' nature of man is to pursue material possessions, which the monster did not do at all. He lived in a hovel, wore little clothing, and generally had no more stuff than what he needed to live.
What is the problem that faces you?
My problem is frustration. I'm deeply upset by various aspects of the world we live in - apathy, injustice, greed - but there's only so much I can do for it. Finding my place, as an individual working for a better society, is just amazingly hard.
What is the monster in Things Fall Apart?
The monster is blind faith - whether Christian or Ibo. Following a system you don't understand, fanatically, to the extent of hurting people you care about, is always monstrous.
What are the characters and setting for your problem?
As my frustration lies within me, I suppose the setting is within myself.. but it's also a global issue, since my frustration is that I can't fix the world on my own. The characteristics are something along the lines of frustration, laziness, apathy, and time constraints, because without them, I wouldn't be so frustrated.
What is the worst job you've ever had-or-What are you being educated for?
I'm being educated to learn how to fit well into society. In elementary school, it's to keep us out of parents' hair, let them work, get some "normal" socialization, teach us how to sit in chairs and conform to schedules and learn to read and all that. Later, it's to guide us to a good fit in society - good education means good, well-paying job, well-paying job means you fit into the system in effect.
I, personally, am educating myself to open some eyes. There's a lot that I consider more important than finding a well-paying job and living in a nice neighborhood; I'm hoping to learn enough about the human mind through psychology to effectively impact what's goin' on.

Joan of Arc is wicked freakin' awesome. I looked up some pictures, then realized that I know pretty much nothing about her. She heard voices, led armies, all the good stuff, when she was only 17, and was executed by the church when she was my age. I'm not religious at all, but I think it's really cool that she stuck with her faith in the face of persecution, and eventually was canonized. Getting credit's always cool.
